Crews from Hindley, Atherton and Leigh fire stations were called to the semi-detached property on Garston Close in Westleigh shortly after 7.15am on Thursday.

The blaze had started in a bedroom and spread to the roof of the building, which was unoccupied at the time.

Firefighters worked to bring it under control, but two bedrooms and a section of the roof were destroyed. Fortunately the fire did not spread to the adjoining property.

Electricity North West staff were called to switch off power to the house and a local authority building inspector had to check the roof was in a safe condition.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but it is not believed to be suspicious.
