Body found in canal after search by emergency services

A man's body has been found in a canal after emergency services were called this morning.

An underwater search team joined firefighters and paramedics at the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in Leigh town centre on Thursday.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called at about 7am on Thursday to reports there was a body in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal near King Street in Leigh.

"GMFRS, NWAS and a GMP underwater search team attended and remain at the scene."

The spokesman confirmed shortly before 9.45am that a body had been found and inquiries were ongoing.
