Bomb squad carry out controlled explosion of grenade pulled out of canal

A controlled explosion has been carried out after a grenade was discovered in a canal.

The bomb squad was called to the Bridgewater Canal in Astley at around 4pm on Sunday after it was pulled from the water by people magnet fishing.

Part of Higher Green Lane and the canal towpath were cordoned off while the grenade was moved to a safer location, so it could be dealt with in daylight.

On Monday morning, a police spokesman said: "A controlled explosion is due to take place shortly after a grenade was discovered in the canal yesterday afternoon near Higher Green Lane, Astley.

"Please do not be alarmed if you hear this.

"The cordon is expected to be lifted soon afterwards and officers would like to thank local residents for their cooperation during this incident."
