Borough turnout for mayoral vote 27 per cent

More than 64,000 registered votes across Wigan and Leigh yesterday. The result is expected later on Friday.

The borough's figure was consistent with the GM figures, with the entire combined authority area turnout just under 29 per cent.

Trafford (38.35) had highest proportion of voters, Salford (25.11) the lowest.

In total, 574,543 votes were cast across GM.

Although the figures for Wigan borough suggest a low turnout overall, they represent a marked increase on the 2012 Police and Crime Commissioner election.

Wigan's turnout then was was a meagre 11.42 per cent with 28,010 votes in total, lower than the 13.9 per cent turnover for the whole of GM.
