"No injuries have been reported."

Nobody has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing, they added.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We got a call at 2.38pm. We attended with an ambulance but we haven’t taken anyone to hospital."

Ashton councillor, Coun Anthony Sykes, who was told about the crash by his partner, said he was surprised the car had managed to get beyond bollards which are up near the shop.

Coun Sykes said: "The car has been taken away and there is police tape up.

"The front window of the shop has been smashed and the wall below.

"There are bollards stopping cars mounting the pavement, so I don't know how the car has manged to get through them.

"It's very unusual and I was told it was a white VW Golf but I'm not sure.

He added: "I hope nobody is injured."
