Church's incredible decade of donations

Generous parishioners are reflecting on more than a decade of raising thousands of pounds for some of the world's poorest people.

St Oswald’s Community Helping Develop Overseas Communities (SOCHDOC) in Ashton has raised more than £20,000 in 12 years, largely for education projects in Africa.

The group based around St Oswald’s and St Edmund Arrowsmith parish has spent years supporting schools in Nigeria and Kenya and has also started supporting Tools With A Mission (TWAM) to get unused or unwanted implements out to where they are needed most.

SOCHDOC was founded in 2005 after a resident was so concerned by the appalling devastation of the Boxing Day tsunami she wanted to do something to help disadvantaged communities and has gone from strength to strength since.

Secretary Geraldine Sankey said: “It came about from the first meeting, we just wanted to do something to help people in the world. I think we’re most proud of just maintaining it for more than 10 years as such a small group.”
