Controversial comic Roy Chubby Brown is coming to Wigan

Anyone easily offended or of a delicate disposition will want to give The Rose Club in Hindley a wide berth next month when the notorious Roy Chubby Brown turns up.

The veteran stand-up’s foul-mouthed humour and one-man war against political correctness has seen him banned from many council-run venues, kept off TV and derided for racism, sexism and homophobia.

That, however, has done nothing to deter his loyal fanbase and Wiganers who love his ‘completely blue’ approach to comedy will be able to see him in action on August 2.

A spokesman for Roy said: “For all those who’ve seen his show, you know this foul-mouthed, near-the-knuckle comedian will take you on a roller coaster ride that will leave your sides aching and your jaw dropping.

“For all those who know the man, you will consider yourself fortunate to have met a lovely, modest, gentle man who will have your guts for garters if you dare swear in front of ladies or children.

“Either way, Roy Chubby Brown does not disappoint.”

Roy will be hoping his visit to Hindley is less eventful than his trip to the DW Stadium last December when the show had to be cut short following a stage invasion.

Now in his 70s, Middlesborough native Roy’s career spans more than 30 years and his distinctive outfit including a patchwork jacket, flying cap and goggles and red bow tie has made him one of stand-up’s most recognisable performers.

His formula has rarely changed over the years and generated endless controversy for attacks on ethnic and minority groups but has also seen his DVDs enjoy cult status with massive sales and his tours regularly sell out completely.

His 2018 tour shows little sign of him mellowing or compromising as it has the title The Second Coming (Yes He’s Still Alive!) and the poster promises an act “bluer than ever”.

In recent years both the criticism and the success have ramped up, with a newer fan base discovering his old-fashioned routines and material after The League of Gentlemen writers named their grim Northern town Royston Vasey, the name he was born with.

Roy was even invited on the programme, appearing as the mayor.

He also fundraises for the James Cook Hospital where he was treated for cancer and has written a song to raise cash for baby hospice Zoe’s Place but also became the only person ever to have a hit on Top of the Pops while using a certain four-letter word.
