While being spared an immediate jail spell, a relentless thief has been barred from parts of his own town by magistrates.

A prolific Wigan thief has been barred from parts of his own town after admitting to a long string of thefts.

Daniel Gill, 35, of Elmsbury Street, Ashton, repeatedly targeted his local Farm Foods, B&M Bargains, Home Bargains and Boots to steal hundreds of pounds worth of goods including vapes, alcohol, chocolate, laundry products, electrical goods, bathroom products and even an inflatable paddling pool, mainly through shoplifting although he did admit to burgling Farm Foods twice.

Gill also pleaded guilty to the common assault of someone who prevented him from stealing laundry items from a Spar shop plus a bail breach.

Returning to court for sentencing he was given a 12-month custodial sentence which was suspended for 18 months.

Gill was also ordered to undergo drug addiction treatment, complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities and he was told that an exclusion zone will prohibit his admission to certain areas of Ashton, described on a map, for the next two years.
