Crews from Atherton and Leigh fire stations had to force their way into the property on Derwent Street in Tyldesley, as well as through a security door on the first floor.

They found a "significant" number of cannabis plants growing in the house.

Firefighters worked to put out the blaze, but the first floor was heavily smoke-logged and the front bedroom was gutted.

One man, who had been inside the property, got out before crews arrived and was not hurt.

The fire, which started at around 3am on Monday, is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault with the wiring for the cannabis farm.

Police attended and anyone with information about the production of cannabis is asked to call them on 101.
