The windows of Frankies on Gerard Street, Ashton, were stoved in by gold Toyota Avensis which mounted the kerb in reverse and avoided a waste paper bin in order to inflict the damage before driving off.

Police are investigating the attack which happened at 9.23pm on Sunday. No-one was hurt.

One witness, who did not wish to be identified, said: "I had just got off the bus across the road and saw this car reversing onto the pavement and then straight into the double windows of Frankies.

"They did well to avoid the bin but they didn't seem to care about who might be in the way.

"There were pedestrians outside the customers and staff in the shop.

"Fortunately they all managed to get out of the way and no-one came to any harm but it was a bizarre and frightening sight. I was shaken that anyone could do that, especially with so many people around."

The onlooker said that he did not glimpse who was driving the vehicle nor how many occupants there were.
