Driver arrested and passenger dies after car crashes into trees

A man had died and another is in police custody following a fatal collision in Leigh

Around 11pm on Saturday 22 August 2020 a Mercedes A200 was travelling east along the East Lancs Road when it approached a roundabout at the junction of Warrington Road – commonly known as the Greyhound Roundabout.

The car travelled straight over the roundabout before colliding with trees.

A passenger in the vehicle, a man aged 30, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A man aged 29 was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Constable Karl Horner of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this dreadful time.

“They are being supported by specialist officers while our investigations continue.

“It’s vital that anyone with information, who witnessed the crash or saw the car prior to the collision gets in touch.

“We would also ask that anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage that can assist us contact police.”
