Ex-Wigan councillor’s court date for sick images

A former councillor from Wigan accused of having thousands of indecent images of children and extreme pornography involving animals will face a crown court judge next month.

Joe Shaw, of Dicconson Street, will learn his fate at Bolton Crown Court on August 12.

The date was fixed at a short remote hearing on Friday from which the defendant was excused as he is shielding.

Defending, Steven Swift told Judge Martin Walsh his client will enter guilty pleas.

Shaw, 53, faced 12 charges when he was brought before magistrates back in March.

The accusations include having around 7,000 indecent images of children as well as portrayals of intercourse involving dogs.

He is also accused of having prohibited images of children, distributing indecent photographs and breaking numerous terms of a previous sexual offences prevention order made at Liverpool Crown Court.

Justin Hayhoe appeared on Friday for the prosecution.
