A man has admitted bursting into a Wigan town centre eatery armed with a knife and meat cleaver.

Police descended on McDonald’s in Standishgate shortly after 6am on October 15 when Christopher Murphy, 35, of Mesnes Park Terrace, Wigan, entered the fast food restaurant brandishing the lethal weapons.

A taser was trained on him but police did not need to use it and no-one was injured in the incident.

Murphy appeared before Wigan and Leigh magistrates to plead guilty to two counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Justices sent him to Bolton Crown Court for sentencing and remanded him in custody pending that appearance on November 12, the reasons cited being the nature and seriousness of the crime and the fact that Murphy has mental health issues causing extreme reactions to situations.
