Man arrested in Wigan woodland after report of people being threatened with axe

There was a large police presence at the scene on Spindlewood Road in Ince on Sunday evening.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to reports that the occupants of a house on the street were being threatened by a man with an axe at around 5pm.

Specialist officers, including a dog unit, located a man in an area of woodland.

He was arrested and when the police searched the green space an axe was found nearby.

Officers surrounded the woodland to ensure the man could not escape, with the large police presence attracting considerable interest from residents in the area.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was taken to hospital to have a minor injury treated.

No other injuries have been reported from the incident, which lasted around an hour and a half in total.

GMP says it is not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
