Man arrested on suspicion of rape in Wigan

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of rape after an incident in Wigan town centre.

A woman in her 20s was found in a distressed state by a member of the public shortly after 12.30am on Saturday.

Police were alerted and the woman was taken to hospital.

An investigation was launched and officers established that the woman had been walking on Wallgate when she was followed into a car park by a man some time between 11.30pm on Friday and 12.30am on Saturday.

A 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape on Saturday night and remains in custody for questioning.

Det Insp Simon Edgington, of Greater Manchester Police's Wigan division, said: “We have a man in custody but our investigation is still in its early stages, and we are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened while we continue to support the victim.

“I know that an incident like this might cause a lot of concern but I would like to assure people that we are have a team of detectives dedicated to this investigation.“I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to police with information so far, and I would encourage anyone else out there who might know something to please contact police as soon as you can.Police can be contacted on 0161 856 5307.
