A man has been charged as police crack down on begging in Wigan town centre.

Roy Smalley, 51, was arrested on Tuesday, July 7 after a police patrol of the town centre.

He has since been charged with one count of begging in a public place.

He has been bailed and is due to appear at Wigan Magistrates' Court on August 5.

The arrest comes after officers from Wigan town centre neighbourhood team have been responding to reports and concerns from the public about begging.
