Man confesses to arson attack which wrecked Wigan pub

A man has admitted starting the fire that ravaged a popular Wigan pub.

Karl Banks, 38, of Greatacre, Whelley, appeared before a Bolton Crown Court judge to admit a charge of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered concerning a February 2 blaze which devasted the Earl of Balcarres on Scholes.

After the attack landlady Leanne Brownridge, who had been at hospital with her daughter at the time and so avoided being caught up in it, said that it had nonetheless cost her her home and her livelihood.

Firefighters managed to rescue two pet dogs and a tortoise from the inferno which ripped through the living quarters.

Sentencing of Banks was adjourned until April 13 for the peparation of reports.
