Masked robbers attack cyclist with plank of wood before stealing his bike

Police are on the hunt for a pair of young men who assaulted a cyclist before stealing his bike, phone and wallet.

At around 6am this morning (Saturday 22 August 2020) a man was cycling close to the junction of the guided busway and Holden Road, Leigh when he was approached by two males, described as being in their late teens.

One of the males was armed with a piece of wood, who hit the cyclist over the back of the head, causing him to fall from his bike.

The man was further assaulted as he lay on the floor.

The pair then stole the victim's bike, phone and wallet before leaving the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for a head injury. He has since been released from hospital.

One offender is described as between 16 to 18-years-old, with white tanned skin, of slim build and wearing a black face mask, black jacket and dark tracksuit bottoms.

The second is also described as between 16 to 18-years-old, white, of slim build and wearing a black face mask and grey jacket.

Detective Sergeant Sophie O’Rourke of GMP's Wigan District said: "This was an unprovoked and cowardly assault that could have easily resulted in more significant injuries.

"We're determined to find those responsible for this attack and have released a picture of the bike stolen in the hope there's someone out there who can help.

"Were you in the area at the time, recognise the descriptions or know of anyone who has come into the possession of a bike like this recently.

"If so, please get in touch with police."
