The semi-detached house in Bulteel Street, Pemberton, was filled with smoke as a result but, thankfully, the occupant was out at the time of the early hours attack.

Crews from Wigan and Hindley were called to the scene at around 3am on Tuesday October 25 to find the front door alight.

Four firefighters wearing breathing gear searched the property for occupants and drew a blank and then the owner, who had been staying at a friend’s house, arrived about half an hour later.

A spokesman for the Wigan crew said that smoke was ventilated from the house and firefighters checked with the residents of the adjoining semi that the fumes hadn’t got through into their home – which they hadn’t.

He added that the matter had now been passed onto the police and a Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue investigation team.

Anyone with details is asked to ring police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
