"A large police presence will be at the Park to turn anyway anyone trying to enter the vicinity.

"Our priority is to ensure the safety of the people of Greater Manchester and anyone reported to be flouting the legislation is reminded that officers will enforce the law where necessary."

Hundreds of people replied to the post, with some explaining the event was being held to raise money for a mental health charity in memory of someone who had died.

Skelmersdale Police also reported concerns that a car meet was being planned in their area, though it was not said if it was linked to the event in Leigh.

On Facebook, they said: "We have had some information passed to us that an organised car meet up may be happening in the Skelmersdale area.

"This has been moved on from the Greater Manchester Police area already. We have got extra officers ready and waiting in the area to deal with any issues if this does happen.

"If you see any issues in the area please let us know on 101."
