Prison officer accused of taking drugs into Wigan jail

A prison officer has been accused of conspiring to peddle drugs at her Wigan jail.

Annette Causey is also charged with smuggling contraband tobacco into Hindley Prison.

The 33-year-old of Warrington Road, Abram, appeared before Wigan magistrates to face three charges including one that she conspired with four members of the public to supply cannabis resin between April and July 2018 at the Bickershaw institution.

She is also charged with conspiring to supplying class B drugs and tobacco between March and July 2018 and smuggling tobacco into the jail for a prisoner on July 10 2018.

Her co-accuseds, who all appeared separately before the bench, are Jamie Ellis, Kayleigh Sanderson, Mark Berry and Adam Holme.

Ellis, 29, of Lakenheth Road, Knowsley, is charged with conspiring with Causey, Sanderston and Berry to supply cannabis resin and six mobile phones inside prison between March and July 2018.

Sanderson, 24, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes, is charged with conspiring with Causey, Ellis and Berry to supply a quantity of cannabis resin, between the same dates.

Berry, 31, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes, also faces a charge of conspiring with Causey, Ellis and Sanderson to supply cannabis resin and of possessing a mobile phone inside a prison during the same period.

Holme, 29, pleaded guilty to possessing a mobile phone inside HMP Hindley between March and April 2019.

All five have been given unconditional bail and have had their cases referred to Bolton Crown Court on April 8.
