An angry Wigan farmer turned detective to track down a fly-tipper and send back all his rubbish.

Stuart Baldwin and daughter Megan were so upset by the dumping of tyres at Haydock Park Farm that they managed to find the culprit and re-deposit the trash at the front of his house.

The pair said covert cameras and a friend had helped them identify the offender as he ditched the tyres on Tuesday. The man later contacted them after featuring in a Facebook post, saying he would remove them but when he failed to turn up, they took matters into their own hands.

Stuart, who lives with Megan, wife Debbie and son Joel, said: “The man has been caught on camera tipping tyres out of a van. He had hired the vehicle and said he was going to move the tyres for someone but he dumped them on our land. He came to the farm and said he would move them but he didn’t so we delivered them back to his house and returned the favour. Fly-tipping comes at a cost and the police do nothing. It was disgusting.”

Megan said they were a family business and also work hard with their recycling company SED Services Ltd, composing 200,000 tonnes of green waste a year.

She added: “Through a good friend, we caught the fly-tipper in the act. The lad later rang me saying he didn’t want to give his name but admitted to fly-tipping. I said I would find out his name either way so he agreed to come down.

“He met us and said he would remove the tyres, but three days later he hadn’t removed them so as we knew his full name and address as he’d given them to us, we delivered them back to him.”

“She added: “We have currently put sunflowers up all round the farm for the public when walking down the tracks or nearby houses for a lovely view, and sadly we get people like this tipping there rubbish on our land.”

A Wigan Council spokesman said they were aware of the incident and are currently investigating it.

They added: “We encourage anybody with information relating to fly tipping offences to contact us so we can take the appropriate course of action.”
