Teenagers abandoned a car after spotting the police... one came back to ask for his phone!

A pair of teenagers who were caught driving erratically abandoned their vehicle after realising the police were onto them, only for one of the boys to return later to ask for his phone back!

An 18-year-old male driver and his 16-year-old male passenger were followed by officers after the car they were in was spotted driving erratically in Atherton Road, Hindley, yesterday (Monday) evening.

After apparently realising they were being followed by the force, the occupants parked up the car in Long Lane and fled the scene, leaving behind several personal items.

Officers carried out a search of the vehicle and, to their shock, the driver later returned to the vehicle to ask for the phone he had left behind.

After being questioned about some of the items found in the car, he tried to run away again but was apprehended after a short chase.

He was arrested on suspicion of possessing a Class B drug and an offensive weapon. The 18-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance or a licence, as well as Class B possession and obstructing the police. The vehicle was also seized for having no insurance.

A statement on the GMP Leigh, Atherton and Hindley social media page said: "Officers on duty in the Hindley area on Monday 20th July 2020 arrested two males in relation to a vehicle earlier this evening.

"Officers witnessed a vehicle driving erratically on Atherton Road and the vehicle parked on a car park on Long Lane and for some unknown reason the occupants fled quickly and left items of note in the vehicle.

"The driver returned along with a passenger requesting his phone back from the vehicle. When spoken to in relation to driving offences and a search conducted under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act the passenger decided to flee again! A short chase later and he was apprehended.

"At 20:32 a 16 year old male was arrested on suspicion of possession of class B and an offensive weapon and an 18 year old male was arrested on suspicion of driving without insurance, a license, possession of class B and obstruct police.

"The vehicle was also seized for having no insurance."
