Wigan borough siege ends after police storm house and take injured man to hospital

A stand-off of almost four hours ended when police stormed a Wigan borough home to detain a distressed man who had self-harmed and was threatening to do himself further injury.

The unnamed Atherton resident, who is in his 50s, was taken to hospital for treatment to several cuts, including to his neck, before being arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

Streets were cordoned off and there was a heavy emergency services presence, including the tactical aid unit, after police responded to reports of a concern for welfare in the cul-de-sac at around 3pm on Monday October 23.

It was reported that the man had “hurt himself” and wasn’t responding to officers so a police negotiator was called in to mediate with him.

Eventually officers got into the home and took the man to hospital for treatment for wounds which were described as “non-life-threatening and non-life-changing.”

A GMP spokesman said he spent most of the night in hospital before being charged at 6am.
