Wigan crime suspect tries to steal bobby's wallet while under arrest in patrol car

A brazen man under arrest for burglary tried to steal a Wigan bobby's wallet while he was sitting in the back of a police car.

The thief was arrested on Saturday evening after police were called to reports of a burglary on St James's Road, in Orrell.

The man had been detained by the occupant of the house after he had attempted to steal a vehicle from the driveway, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary of a dwelling and put in the back of a police car, however with breathtaking cheek, minutes later, he climbed over into the front of the car and tried to steal an officer's wallet.

He had removed its contents before police spotted what he had done.

The man was then arrested again on suspicion of theft and has since been charged with burglary, fraud, aggravated vehicle-taking and theft and has been remanded into custody.

A post on GMP Wigan West Facebook page, said: "At 22:45hrs on Saturday 15th Feb C relief officers responded to reports of a male detained by the occupant of a property on St James's Road, Orrell, having attempted to steal his motor vehicle from the driveway.

"The suspect was arrested for burglary to dwelling.

"His crime spree was not over however as after being placed into the rear of the police car he thought it a good idea to steal an officers wallet and remove the contents therein having reached into the front, not clever and further arrested for theft.

"The male has now been charged with burglary, fraud, aggravated vehicle taking, theft and remanded in custody."
