Wigan jail employee accused of supplying drugs in prison faces long wait for date in dock

The trial of a prison officer accused of conspiring to peddle drugs at her Wigan jail has been delayed by almost a year.

Annette Causey is also charged with smuggling contraband tobacco into Hindley Prison.

The 33-year-old of Warrington Road, Abram, last month appeared before Wigan magistrates facing three charges including one that she conspired with four members of the public to supply cannabis resin between April and July 2018 at the Bickershaw institution.

She is also charged with conspiring to supply class B drugs and tobacco between March and July 2018 and smuggling tobacco into the jail for a prisoner on July 10 2018.

Jamie Ellis, 29, of Lakenheath Road, Knowsley, is charged with conspiring with Causey, Kayleigh Sanderston and Mark Berry to supply cannabis resin and six mobile phones inside prison between March and July 2018.

Sanderson, 24, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes, is charged with conspiring with Causey, Ellis and Berry to supply cannabis resin.

Berry, 31, of Baguley Avenue, Widnes, also faces a charge of conspiring with Causey, Ellis and Sanderson to supply cannabis resin and possessing a mobile phone inside a prison.

Adam Holme, 29, pleaded guilty to possessing a mobile phone inside HMP Hindley between March and April 2019.

Because of the Covid-19 outbreak, their Bolton Crown Court cases have been postponed. A pre-trial preparation hearing will be held on July 29 but the trial of the four defendants was delayed until March 29 2021. All are on bail.
