Wigan man denies £5k car-wrecking spree

A man has been accused of going on a car-wrecking spree which has cost the owners thousands of pounds.

Matthew Smith, 47, of Pepper Lane, Standish, faces no fewer than eight charges of criminal damage to cars, all of which are alleged to have taken place on Sunday March 22 in his home town.

Although the bill for one of the vehicles is not yet know, the overall cost the victims has been estimated to be in excess of £5,000, Wigan and Leigh magistrates heard.

Damaged were a Ford Mondeo, Range Rover, Nissan Duke, Vauxhall Astra, Peugeot, Mercedes, Ford KA and a Vauxhall Astra, the bench was told.

Smith denied all the charges against him when he appeared in the dock and justices ordered that he be released on unconditional bail pending his trial at the same court which has been set for June 29.
