A speeding Wigan motorist has been spared a ban - because it would cost him his job and home.

Justices took pity on Kieran Costello who admitted to breaking the 70mph limit on the M61 in his Mercedes C63. Points accrued from previous offences meant the 37-year-old, of Ince Green Lane, Ince, would normally have been disqualified under the “totting” system.

But the bench observed he was a self-employed contractor working all over the region who would then be unable to pay his mortgage and he could not use public transport because of the distances he travels and the tools he needs. Neither would he be able to find other work in the current climate.

As a result six points were put on his licence and he was told to pay a fine, victim surcharge and costs of £285.
