People living in Hindley Green said the route, to the back of Carr Common Road that exits onto Penswick Road, is being used as a “rat run” including an escape route by criminals for stolen and suspect vehicles.

Local councillor John Vickers said there was a police chase at lunchtime a week last Saturday on the route, with residents walking along reporting a near miss from both vehicles.

Nobody was injured.

Coun Vickers want to see a barrier put up at some point along the track before tragedy strikes.

He said the sticking point was that the land is unadopted, but that he would work with Wigan Council to address the problem.

He said: “That this track runs past a children’s play area makes the potential outcome unthinkable. This situation is unacceptable.

“The track is unadopted so finding a solution presents issues, however I have been and continue to work with the council to have a suitable barrier erected at some point along the track.

He added: “This will eliminate the cut through but still allow access to the rear of the houses for residents and emergency services if needed.

“I will update people when I have further information.”

Resident Frank McFadden added: “This must be stopped.”

Wigan Council declined to comment when asked by the Wigan Today as they said the track was unadopted land.

Greater Manchester Police were also unavailable for comment.
