Wigan and Leigh magistrates heard that a drunken Lisa Lound later also assaulted the police officer who arrested her but fortunately he sustained no injury.

Prosecutors say the 46-year-old was stopped trying to steal bottles of vodka and brandy plus medication from the town’s Tesco Extra store, on Central Park Way, on January 23.

On being detained by security staff, she butted one of them - Anthony Alexander - in the mouth, causing him to lose a false tooth.

The hearing was told that she then attacked PC Bretherton who was called by the store to sort out the fracas.

Lound, of St George’s Church, Water Street, Wigan, pleaded guilty to causing Mr Alexander actual bodily harm, assaulting PC Bretherton by beating while working for the emergency services, and to the theft of the liquor and medication valued together worth £43.

Jailing Lound for a total of four months, the chairman of the bench told her: “The offence was so serious because you were caught stealing alcohol and other items from Tesco and when confronted by the security staff you behaved in a violent and aggressive manner and headbutted the victim.

“This was a totally unprovoked and unnecessary assault on a person serving the public.

“This caused the loss of a false tooth. This was the use of a weapon.

“It was necessary for shop staff to intervene to stop the situation escalating further.

“After detention you then assaulted the police officer. Fortunately, he did not suffer any injury.

“It is clear that you were also heavily under the influence of alcohol.”

As well as the custodial sentence - four months for the ABH, one for assaulting the constable and one for the theft, all to run concurrently - Lound was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £122.

However, she was not ordered to pay Mr Alexander any compensation because justices had sent her to prison.
