Visitors to the Grand Arcade Shopping Centre are being urged to clear out their cupboards and give their unwanted books a new lease of life by donating them to its honesty library.

The library will be a work on a “take a book, donate a book or leave a small donation” basis and will be a gathering place where the local community can share their favourite literature and stories.

All donations will go to the Mayor’s charity appeal Wigan and Leigh Hospice.

The scheme hopes to promote the importance of reading to people of all ages and to inspire children and young people to read, share and even write their own fantastic stories.

The library will be launched in October to coincide with the centre’s Read On campaign to promote the importance of education and reading for pleasure by providing books to the community as well as to raise money for charity.

The Grand Arcade will be collecting books in the run up to the launch via Read On collection bins located on the lower level and at the Customer Service Desk on the upper level.

The Read On campaign will take place at the centre throughout October and any money raised will be donated to the hospice.

Additional activities will also take place as part of the Read On promotion including book character super hero days, story-telling, story-writing workshops and competitions as well as community outreach projects with participation from centre staff.

Centre manager John Sanson said: “Grand Arcade is a community-focused shopping centre and we look forward to seeing the honesty library in full swing, we hope that our shoppers get into the spirit of the campaign and donate as many books as they can.”
