Young Wigan footballers get new kit from council grant

FC Britannia in Ince handed the cash from Wigan Council’s Brighter Borough pot, which gives councillors a yearly

allowance to put back into the community.

Jane Uzsoy, treasurer of the football club and a governor and welfare assistant at Britannia Bridge Primary School where the team plays, said: “We try to change the kit every two years but we now have six teams so this proves difficult as we also want to keep our subs low and affordable for local families.

“We’re so thankful for the money that we’ve been awarded. Not only will it fund the kits but also some footballs and we’ve already purchased an FA standard respect barrier for the pitch. It’s a great investment for a small Ince football club!”

FC Britannia has six teams ranging from under 7’s to under 13’s and prides itself on giving players a sense of achievement and belonging.

Jane added: “I have two children who are at the school and play for the club and it’s been fantastic for them.

“My eldest isn’t the most confident but playing football has helped him to make some really good friends. As soon as he and the others put on their kit, they feel like they have achieved something.”

The team will be presented with their new kits later in the year ready for the start of the season in September.

Coun David Molyneux said: “For children in a sporting community like this, being able to put on a brand new kit with their club’s badge is special. Jane explained to me that their club isn’t all about winning, it’s about helping children fulfil their dreams and encourage them to do something they enjoy.

“The club relies on volunteers and sub money so it was an easy decision to help them out in this way.

“I enjoyed meeting them all and I hope they enjoy their new equipment and give their all each week.”
