But police have today revealed that Mr Ennis, from Burscough, died on Saturday, April 21.

A statement from his family said: "The Ennis family has been devastated by this tragic cycling accident. Gary put his heart and soul into his Ironman training and would have been a fine competitor at the event later in the year.

"We have lost the most kind and generous husband, son and brother who always found time for everyone. He was the perfect gentleman and friend to all he met.

"Our lives will never be the same without his smile. We appreciate everybody's kind words and thoughts at this devastating time, we know how well loved and respected Gary was by so many people."

Earlier this month police appealed for witnesses to the collision to call them on 101, quoting log 889 of April 9.
