An encouraging total of 22 out of the 58 newly published scores - those visited between April 7 and June 2 - were told they are performing to the highest standard.

Businesses that serve food are rated on a scale of zero to five on how hygienically it is handled; how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored; the condition of the structure of the buildings; the cleanliness, lay-out, lighting, ventilation and other facilities as well as how the business manages and records what it does to ensure food is safe.

Those that score between zero and two are below the level required with three classed as satisfactory, four as good and five as very good.

Some notable scores include the Asda hypermarket at Newtown which received a two rating and was told it needs to make improvements.

Elsewhere, the Fat Olive on Upper Dicconson Street performed the perfect turnaround. Having scored only a one earlier this year it has now more than redeemed itself with a perfect five. Meanwhile Wigan Market’s Little Orange Cafe saw an improvement on its previous zero score, going up to a one.

No businesses scored zero in the latest round but nine were rated as one and nine were given a two.

There were nine threes, nine fours and 22 fives.

The information provided on businesses is held on behalf of local authorities participating in the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme in England, Northern Ireland and Wales or the Food Hygiene Information Scheme in Scotland.

The inspections continue throughout the year, with ratings designed to provide reassurance and information to customers.

Establishments are also marked on confidence in management, which is graded on the performance of those in charge and issues such as how well guidelines are understood by the workforce as well as things such as the track record of the company and complaint history.
