Inquest launched into young Wigan off-road biker's death

The inquest has opened into the death of a Wigan 20-year-old following a motorbike crash.

Alex Roby was riding an off-road vehicle along Bryn Gates Road, Bamfurlong, with a friend when it was in collision with a barrier.

Bolton Coroner’s Court heard that Alex suffered serious injuries to his neck, collarbone and jaw and that, despite paramedics’ best efforts at the scene, they were unable to save him.

Senior coroner Timothy Brennand told the hearing that a post-mortem examination held at Wigan Infirmary later concluded that the young man had died as a result of multiple injuries.

The court heard that Alex, from Ashton, was an insulation fitter but enjoyed riding bikes as a hobby.

Following the September 12 tragedy, floral tributes were laid at the scene.

Colourful bouquets and pictures remembering Alex have lined the roadside, including photos of him on his bike. Bottles of beer and cider, a McDonald’s coffee cup and teddy bear were also placed in tribute in the area leading to Bryn Hall Cottages.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the collision, including owners of vehicles with dashcams. Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident number 1207 of 12/09/2020.

Mr Brennand adjourned the hearing for the preparation of reports and a date for the full inquest was set for February 25 next year.
