Kym judges town's own Strictly show

Wigan-born soap star Kym Marsh will decide who gets to keep dancing at a leading charity's glamorous Strictly-style event.

Coronation Street Michelle McDonald will lead the judging panel at the Strictly Dance event organised by Wigan and Leigh Hospice (WLH) at the DW Stadium.

Ten contestants will spend several weeks perfecting their footwork and routines after being partnered with expert dancers before strutting their stuff at the fund-raising event on November 12.

The Wigan event is inspired by the host of famous faces who have mastered their steps and performed in front of Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and the rest of the judging panel on the hit BBC show Strictly Come Dancing.

Host Philip Hurst will put the entrants through their paces in a rigorous training programme to prime them for performance. The participant who impresses the judges most with their ability to tell the cha-cha-cha from the Charleston will be crowned Strictly Dance Glitterball Champion 2016.

WLH chief executive Dr Alan Baron said: “We are delighted Kym has accepted our invitation to be a judge at our first ever Strictly Dance event. As a Wigan girl who has risen to fame and gained vast experience in the entertainment and music industry she will make an excellent judge and it’s wonderful that she is supporting her local hospice.

“We are now in the process of finalising our 10 contestants before they embark on their dance training with Hurst Dance Studios and their team of highly-experienced dancers.

“Please come along and support us on the night. There are also a whole host of sponsorship opportunities available so please get involved and help us to make this event a fantastic success.”

The rest of the judging panel has yet to be announced. The Hindley-based charity is now looking for local businesses to support the event by taking up the sponsorship packages. All proceeds will be ploughed back into WLH’s work providing high-quality palliative care for Wiganers with life-limiting illnesses, both at its Kildare Street headquarters and in patients’ own homes.
