Lanterns released in tribute to Jade

A Wigan Council spokesman said that Fred Longworth High in Tyldesley would be opening both today and tomorrow, despite the Easter holidays, in view of yesterday’s tragedy in Chaucer Grove, Atherton.

Police marksmen killed four “out-of-control” dogs and restrained a fifth after the 14-year-old was savaged at a friend’s house.

Officers said that although formal identification has yet to take place they can confirm that the victim is believed to be Jade and that a post-mortem examination would be taking place later.

A Family Liaison Officer is now providing police support to the family and the investigation into the circumstances is continuing.

Jan Garretts, headteacher of Fred Longworth School, said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by Jade’s tragic death. She had only been a pupil at the school since the summer but had made a real impact in that short time.

“Jade was a lively student who always had a smile on her face. She loved music and dance and was a regular at our after school dancing club.

“At what turned out to be her last day at school, Jade was given a progress report by her teachers and was told that everyone was delighted with the progress she was making.

“She will be greatly missed by the Fred Longworth School community. Our thoughts and sympathies are with her family and friends at this terrible time.”

Supt Mark Kenny of Wigan Police said: “This remains a deeply distressing incident for everyone involved and the wider community and our thoughts continue to be with Jade’s family.

“They are understandably devastated by what has happened, as are Jade’s circle of friends.

“Our response is now two-fold - to continue to provide whatever support is necessary to the family alongside a painstaking investigation to establish the truth of what happened.

“With that in mind we still have a small scene at the house and residents will continue to see an increased police presence today and in the coming days.

“A post mortem will be carried out later today after which we hope to know more about how Jade died.

“Part of the investigation will also look at the breed of dogs, which have yet to be confirmed.”

A press conference is to be held at noon at the school, followed by another at Leigh police station shortly after.
