Large blaze at scrap metal recycling plant

Crews from eight stations were called to Kas Metal Trading, on Coal Pit Lane, Atherton, shortly after 3.15am today.

Flames and smoke were billowing from the industrial unit when they arrived.

Roads were closed in the Bag Lane area and residents were urged to keep doors and windows closed because of the smoke.

Firefighters worked to tackle the blaze, but it is understood to have been further fuelled by a diesel tank in the building.

Crews from Atherton, Hindley, Leigh, Bolton, Hyde, Rochdale, Horwich and Stockport fire stations worked throughout the night, alongside the technical response unit, major rescue unit, an air unit and an aerial ladder.

Mick Callan, watch manager at Hindley fire station, said: “At its height there were eight fire engines and one aerial platform.

“The crews used breathing apparatus and jets.

“It took approximately two-and-a-half hours to bring it under control and I would anticipate that crews will remain there throughout the day.”

Incident commander Paul Duggan said: “The fire is under control but if you live in the area please stay indoors and keep your windows and doors shut.

“There are road closures in place around Bag Lane so please don’t travel near the area, although we will work to open the roads again as soon as possible.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known and an investigation is expected to get under way today.

All of the building is thought to have been damaged by smoke, with around 50 per cent damaged by fire.

Three crews remain at the site this morning.

While road closures are still in place, the fire service expects to be able to open the roads soon.
