Late MP Jo Cox inspires huge school party

Haydock High is taking part in the Great Get-Together: a national day of community bonding held on the first anniversary of Jo Cox’s death.

The Batley and Spen MP was killed by a crazed consituent last June.

A recurrent theme of tributes was the 43-year-old’s passion for inclusivity and uniting communities.

This inspired the Get-Together, which teacher Vicky Barker and deputy head Jenny Wright have seized upon.

They are already formulating a host of events at the Clipsley Lane school on Friday, June 16 between 3pm and 7pm, to which everyone is welcome, while planning other outreach activities such as pupil visits to nursing homes and primary schools.

Vicky said: “What happened to Jo Cox flew in the face of everything she stood for. We want to have a big party at the school, with all kinds of games and activities. We are planning an omelette challenge, climbing wall and inviting pensioners to play indoor bowls for starters. Sainsbury’s have been brilliant and are helping us leaflet the event and help us with the omelettes and making cupcakes. There will be plenty more yet, so watch this space! We just want to bring everyone together.”
