The blue Volvo S40 ended up on its roof after the multiple collision in front of Hawkley Hall High in Carr Lane shortly after 3pm today (Tuesday).

Mercifully no-one else was hurt in the dramatic series of crashes.

Wigan fire station watch manager Gareth Gray said it wasn’t clear whether the motorist driving the Volvo had suffered some kind of medical episode as he lost control of the car and hit other vehicles waiting to collect pupils.

It smashed into a Vauxhall Zafira breaking the back wheel off, then hit a Finches double-decker bus, missed a taxi and knocked another car’s wing mirror off before flipping onto its roof.

Mr Gray said: “The collision with the bus caused diesel to leak onto the ground which meant we had to put soil down to soak it up.

“That is all we had to do because the guy, who looked about 50, had got out of the upturned car without assistance.”

The driver was treated in the back of an ambulance.
