A man has died after suffering a 'medical episode' in Wigan.

Police were called to the incident on Stadium Way on Saturday afternoon (March 13).

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly before 4.40pm yesterday, we received a report of a medical episode on Stadium Way where a man passed away."

They added that they could not say what the man's age was but that there was "some suggestion" he was elderly.

Unconfirmed reports said that an elderly man had fallen on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal path and was unconscious.

Eyewitnesses said they saw passers-by come to the man's aid and him being given medical treatment.

They also reported seeing several police and ambulance vehicles in the car park off Scot Lane at Beech Hill next to the canal.
