The unit was split into two shops then, named Outfitters and C&E Wood.

But the shop’s current owner Michelle Skett knows nothing about them.

She said: “It’s a bit of a mystery. My mum has always lived in Platt Bridge and doesn’t remember very much. They could be from a long time ago, I’m not sure.”

Michelle has tried to find out more about the shops from that time and has been told various things by people in Platt Bridge, but has not been able to confirm anything.

One line of enquiry is that Outfitters sold men’s clothes and C&E Wood was a carpet or upholstery shop.

She said: “I remember from childhood it used to be a gym so those shops might have been there before the gym or even below it.”

Michelle plans to erect a new sign and will leave the old signage in place.

But first she would like to find out about the shops and maybe even track down their owners or relatives.

She said: “I want to find out what it was. I think it would be nice for the families if they are still alive to see it from all those years ago.”

Anyone with information about the shops is asked to contact Michelle on 01942 861111 or call into the hair salon.
