CHARLES GRAHAM - A bridge too far

Take a look at this picture of the notorious Prescott Street railway bridge in Wigan.

There it sits: a malevolent presence, ready to trick unsuspecting high-sided vehicles into thinking they can pass beneath it only to snare them in its gaping maw.

Surely it projects some kind of trigonometric illusion to lure so many vans and lorries too high for its dimensions.

Either that or we have quite a few dumb truckers in these parts.

Prescott Street is in danger of wresting the dubious honour of the borough’s most oft-blocked road structure from its counterpart at Gathurst.

It’s not for the want of deterring drivers of larger vehicles. I mean, look at the huge yellow writing on it. What part of “low” and “bridge” do they not understand?

It was theorised a few years ago that lorries come to grief under these arches because their cheapskate owners don’t provide staff with special sat navs that warn of height issues on routes.

That’s as may be, but surely a professional driver should also know how tall and wide their vehicles are to avoid such annoying and embarrassing events.
