CHARLES GRAHAM - Is there really need for a fifth bin?

We are lucky with the way our house is laid out that there’s enough room to tuck away four wheelie bins down the side with little trouble.

But I do know there are many folk having far greater difficulty storing these cumbersome containers and you sometimes see them in an unsightly line-up under the front living room window.

So when we reported the other day that councils might be under pressure to have even more bins at our disposal, so to speak, I felt that this might be a step too much even for the most ecologically minded. The issue centres around the need to separate food waste from garden waste which currently all go in the green bin.

It surprised me. After all, some people have been quite happy to stick all their grass clippings and meal leftovers together to make a nice compost for re-fertilising the garden long before any of us had green wheelies.

The council seems not to be in any hurry and I hope it stays that way. All these bins could end up being more of a fire hazard or obstacle than a help to the environment.
