STEPHANIE, 30, asks: A couple of my friends have started paying for a personal trainer to help get the best results, and they’ve asked me to join in. Before I commit, what exactly are the benefits of training with a personal trainer?

The Colonel says: The biggest reason to take the plunge and consider working with a personal trainer has to be the motivation they give.

A PT is there to push you when you think you can’t go on, analyse your goals and keep you on track, effectively be your spotter and personal cheerleader all in one!

If you find it hard to get yourself to the gym on your own, you just might need that extra support.

They are there to inspire you to push boundaries and skipping out on a session is much less likely when you have a personal trainer waiting for you.

PTs have a wealth of knowledge that it would take you years of googling to accumulate.

They have worked hard and have an understanding of how to train your body and your mind into eating right and exercising effectively to meet your goals.

The knowledge they impart will help you make better, healthier choices and understand what you’ve been doing wrong.

Also, personal trainers are all about structure, from the nutritional plans to your work-outs they will create plans for you to follow and fit around your lifestyle so changing your habits will become second nature.

This structure will show fast and furious results, you might only train twice a week but you will see gains (or losses!) you wouldn’t have seen in weeks had you been going it alone.

If you have serious goals to achieve and have as yet, not managed to get the results you’d like I’d considered talking to a PT, most do free taster sessions, just remember you don’t have to sign up there and then.
