Who would you have on the list?
5. Kay Burley
Kay Burley has been a fixture on Sky News for well over three decades and these days presents her own breakfast show. Beech Hill-born, she started her journalistic career aged just 17 at the Wigan Evening Post and Chronicle before moving to regional and later national television. She has interviewed thousands of famous people, not without causing controversy sometimes, and has also enjoyed the occasional foray into novel writing and reality television. Photo: submit
6. Barry Mason
Barry Mason was a singer and songwriter who penned a string of massive chart hits including The Last Waltz, I Pretend, Winter World of Love and Delilah, working with international stars such as Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Petula Clark, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, Engelbert Humperdinck, Charles Aznavour and Barbra Streisand. He died last year at the age of 85. Here he is pictured with his Delilah lyrics up for auction. Photo: submit
7. Joe Gormley
Joe Gormley went down his first pit aged 14 and rose to become the President of the National Union of Mineworkers for 11 years. One of his biggest claims to fame was to preside over a seven-week national strike in 1972 which was resolved by a 21 per cent increase in pay and concessions for miners, moving them to the top of the UK's industrial wage league, having previously been 17th. Born in Ashton, he stepped down from the NUM leadership in 1982 to be replaced by left-wing firebrand Arthur Scargill. It was later revealed that he had worked for Special Branch by passing on information on extremism within his own union. Photo: Evening Standard
8. George Formby
With a father already a big music hall name, George Formby was perhaps destined for stardom. But no-one could have imagined the banjolele-strumming singer and comedian would end up during the late 1930s and early '40s being the best paid entertainer in the world with a string of hit songs and films. Although it is more than 60 years since he died, a legion of loyal fans keep the memories alive. Photo: General Photographic Agency
