Awards joy for residents and staff as Wigan care home holds its own Oscars

Care home residents and staff donned their glad rags and enjoyed the VIP treatment as they held their own version of the Oscars.

After a difficult year, Lakeside care home in Standish decided to focus on the positives and celebrate the occasions that residents had appeared on television.

The red carpet was rolled out and the home was beautifully decorated to ensure a night of glitz and glamour akin to that usually held in Hollywood.

Residents and staff gathered to watch television clips from the BBC, ITV and This Morning, as well as view clippings from local and national newspapers.

Among the winners were residents Alan, Bill and Derek, who took part in a BBC interview about vaccines; Margaret Robson for appearing in a video about the home’s Rawsthorne Retreat; Winnie and Marion for an interview with Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes on This Morning; Fred and May for a story about their wedding anniversary, and manager Gail Howard for a TV interview.

Rita Cheetham, who won an award after featuring in a newspaper article, said: “I thought it was very good, I was so excited to win, my Oscar is beautiful!”

Derek West said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, Of course, I received an Oscar! I felt that everyone enjoyed the evening, especially Gail who couldn’t get over the fact that she won an Oscar too!”

Care home manager Gail said: “I was overwhelmed with emotions and gratitude to be recognised for an Oscar alongside some of my Lakeside family. It brought tears to my eyes. To receive an Oscar for a job you love is priceless.”
