Emery and Charlie Marsh, nine, pledged to run a marathon in a month in aid of Atherton-based Willow Project, which helps people aged six to 19 affected by mental health and emotional issues.

They initially hoped to raise £100, but so impressed have people been by their athletic efforts and so well marketed were they, that the siblings have now collected a massive £1,600 for the charity.

Their mum Abigail, from Leigh, said: “I’m so proud of them.

“I am happy that they helped such a lovely local charity.

“I don’t think they are that well-known and it’s nice to be able to help out and support them with what they are doing, because I believe it’s really important.”

Charlie had heard about Willow Project from his grandmother, who is a member of the Inner Wheel, and he raised money for the charity a few years ago by holding a bake sale for one of his Beaver badges.

Keen to get moving and make a difference during the coronavirus pandemic, he and Emery set themselves a challenge to run a marathon - 26.2 miles or 42.2km - in July.

Abigail said: “They both really like running and are quite competitive.

“My daughter is more into it than my son - I had to nag him a few times - but they both enjoyed it in the end.

“My daughter is really chuffed with herself.

“They have been doing 2k each day and at first she couldn’t do it without stopping, but she finally achieved it.”

It was the generosity of friends and family that helped them to raise £1,601 for the charity, and Abigail described the effort and total as “phenomenal”.

The money will make a real difference for Willow Project, which provides counselling and support groups for young people and their families.

Sadie Little, volunteer and digital co-ordinator at Willow Project, said: “We are blown away by Charlie and Emery’s empathy, kindness and dedication to supporting us, so that we can continue supporting vulnerable young people in the borough.

“Everyone from Willow Project is so grateful for the support of these two incredible young people!

“Thank you so much Emery and Charlie.”
