She said: “I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the amazing staff @WWLNHS who cared for me today. You guys are the real heroes. I’ve never felt so safe & looked after.

“If you’re gonna do it, make sure you do it good & proper. Big toe broken in 4 places #whataplonker #NHSheroes”

Kel joined Coronation Street earlier this year to play Laura Neelan, the ex-wife of the late loan shark Rick Neelan.

Television drama director Brett Fallis said: “I’m sorry to hear that Kel, I once broke my leg in 2 places and the doctors advice for the future to make sure I don’t get a bone fracture in 2 places was ‘not to go to those 2 places!!’ I pass this advice to you and wish you a speedy recovery.”

As Baroness Barran said in a House of Lords debate this week on the importance of journalists: "Not only are they a trusted source of facts, but they will have a role to play in rallying communities and getting the message across about how we can keep ourselves and our families safe, and protect our NHS. Undoubtedly, they have a critical role."
