These results are also reflected in the efforts of the full time cohort of teacher trainees with some 78 per cent awarded with a grade 1 Outstanding.

The success has seen Aaron Edwards achieve a first class honours in his BA (Hons) Creative Practitioner (Graphics pathway) awarded by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

The freelance designer, from Ashton, said: “I loved completing the top-up course which has set me up really well for a future in the design industry. Now I have a solid idea of where I want to take my career.”

As well as this, David Latimer completed his BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, awarded by UCLan and accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), with a first class honours and is now planning his next steps to becoming a chartered engineer and become a consultant engineer.

Higher Apprentices were also highlighted recently having sailed through their end point assessments for the Nuclear Standard having completed their HND’s.

The University Centre Wigan and Leigh College offers students the chance to study higher education qualifications on their doorstep. Higher level and degree courses are £7,500 or less, making learning locally not just a convenient option.

Dr Janet Thompson, head of higher education, said:: “All our students’ hard work has been worthwhile. There are lots of opportunities in front of them and we are very proud of their achievements. We are particularly proud of the high volume of high grades which we feel is testament to the expert tutoring received as well as each student’s resilience to complete their final year under such challenging times.”
